Amethyst is one of the most characteristic purple-coloured varieties of the mineral quartz. Its colour is caused by the presence of trace elements of iron and titanium in the quartz crystal lattice and by natural radiation.
The specimens from Brazil are typically formed in cavities in basaltic rocks and form raised crystal clusters, but there are also crack-filling, blocky varieties.
