Amethyst is perhaps one of the most popular varieties of quartz. Its variegated, sometimes zoned, purple colour is due to the combination of trace elements of iron and titanium incorporated into the crystal lattice and the background radiation that hits the crystals.
Etymology:
The name amethyst comes from the Greek word „amethystos”, meaning „not drunk”, „not intoxicating”. It takes its name from the ancient belief that amethyst protected against the intoxicating effects of alcohol.

The specimens from Uruguay are mainly from geodes formed in cavities in basaltic rocks. These specimens are characterised by a deeper, more saturated purple colour and a rich, sharply contoured crystal surface.
